The Balmy Breezes tunic

I love sewing. I love trying new techniques and methods. I always jump at the chance of trying something new. I always accept a new fun challenge.
This time was no different. When Maegan from Mae & K blog asked a few bloggers to join a fun sewing series on free patterns - Free Friday Pattern - I looked at all the patterns being showcased on every week this year and I immediately signed up for the Balmy Breezes Tunic.

The Balmy Breezes Tunic is a free pattern by Call Ajaire (for Sew Mama Sew) available only in size 3, that comes along with a tutorial on how to make Lattice smockingIf you follow my blog you may remember that a few posts ago I mentioned that there are two sewing techniques I have never tried: smocking and heirloom. Now there is one left: heirloom. Or... maybe not.

The first title I wrote for this post was: Lettuce smocking aka a failed attempt to make a Lattice smock. :)

And I am sorry (not sorry) if I am already spoiling this post by revealing how this whole story ends. But I needed to spill it out. Phew! That felt great.

The Sweet Simple Dress

I have to be honest. I love to sew patterns that make me learn a new sewing technique/ method, but I also love those simple quick projects that provide some instant gratification. And this is one of them. The Sweet Simple dress is a new pattern from Allison of Freshly Completed - actually it is her first kids clothes pattern!

I have met Allison while we were both testing the School Boy vest pattern. She shared her Gentleman's Bow Tie pattern and I immediately fell in love... (And of course I got the pattern and made one to match the vest!) So I was really happy when I got the chance to test the Sweet Simple Dress for her.

This is a really simple pattern (suitable for beginners) yet adorable.
It has lots of potential for customization (pockets/ no pockets, ruffled hem, sash, flower apliqué, etc.) - don't you love that?
This dress just slips over the head (no buttons or zippers). Oh, and I have to say that I love the pleated puffed sleeves!

I have used a bright yellow lightweight knit for the dress and a floral cotton lawn (in yellow, grey and black) for the sleeves and ruffles. I have also shortened the length to make it a tunic but I think it got halfway between a tunic and a dress actually...

You can get the Sweet Simple dress here and Allison is so sweet that she is offering size 0-3 months for free (here)!

And If you have kids with less than 3 years-old you know how hard it is to make them stand still... :)

Fashion Icon - Project Sewn

This week's theme of Project Sewn is: Fashion Icon!
The challenge is to create a piece (or a complete outfit) inspired by our fashion icon.

Early this week I was trying to find out who my fashion icon was I immediately thought of two great classy ladies I have always admired because of their overall style: Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly.

It was a hard choice to choose between them so I tried to find something they would both have in common.

They both had glamorous sophisticated looks on one hand, but on the other hand they both had a simple everyday look. Think sweatshirts, simple trousers or jeans and ballerina/ flat shoes - I realized this is pretty much my everyday style too. Being a mom of three little kids I like to dress practical pieces yet stylish.

Grace Kelly (Images source here and here)
I didn't had much time to go for the glamorous style (so many sewing projects in hands...) so I had to go for the everyday look and I found they both have in common a simple striped sweatshirt!

This is the Plantain shirt - a free pattern by Deer & Doe. It is very easy and quick to make.
The Plantain comes with three sleeve lenghts (short, 3/4 and long).

Sewing knits is always a challenge because I don't own a serger... I have to improve my skills on topstitching (not always perfect...) and hemming.

I was able to match the stripes on the sides, on the shoulders and on the sleeves! I am really happy with the result as this was my first time matching stripes.
I was very careful when I was cutting the fabric. I displayed the pattern pieces carefully on the fabric so the stripes would match, so I guess that helped...

O tema desta semana do Project Sewn é: Fashion Icon!
This week's theme of Project Sewn is: Fashion Icon!

Made by Rae - as KNITerviews!

Deer & Doe free pattern!

Eléonore from the cherished Deer & Doe patterns is kindly offering a pattern for free! It is the Plantain t-shirt!

I really like the little flare at the hips - it will suit greatly my body shape! And it includes three sleeve lenghts and elbow patches (adorable!).

The great thing about this t-shirt pattern is that you don't need a serger or a twin needle, you can sew it with your sewing machine.

You can read more about this free pattern here (Deer and Doe blog) and download it for free here (Deer and Doe shop).

And while you're at the online shop downloading your free pattern, take a look around the patterns - they are great! I personally love the Sureau dress, the Chardon skirt and the Aubépine dress.

É a t-shirt Plantain!
